You’ve got (or are about to get) a new puppy and are looking into training resources to make sure to raise a well-rounded and happy dog. Congratulations on the new addition, and way to go– you’re off to a great start!
When it comes to dogs, training and behavior correction are an important part of pet parenting, and it’s crucial to start when your dog is a puppy, or as early as possible. Though their playful bites, little barks, and chasing the broom while you are sweeping are absolutely adorable (let’s face it, everything they do is adorable), these behaviors can turn into bad habits if your pup doesn’t get the training and boundaries he needs. ‘Sit’ is a fun and easy place to start when it comes to basic training commands, but there are many facets of raising a well-rounded and behaved dog.
Puppy Training Goals Checklist
In addition to basic commands and fun tricks, this checklist is a good place to start as you work through your puppy training to raise a happy and confident dog.
A trained and confident puppy:
- Walks by your side on a loose leash, following your stride
- Remains calm and confident in all public situations and environments
- Toilets on command, on or off-leash, at home and away
- Does not beg for food
- Remains calm and quiet around other animals
- Remains calm when introduced to strangers, both adults and children
- Does not “protect” food, toys, home or handler
- Is not aggressive toward other animals or people
- Is trustworthy and comfortable when left alone for short periods
- Is well-groomed and healthy – maintains a healthy weight, has a healthy coat, short nails, clean teeth and clean ears
- Is friendly to all but mannerly, seeking direction from his/her handler in all situations
Does your dog meet each of these criteria? This list can help you identify your dog’s strengths and weaknesses so you know what to focus on in your next training session.
